SoundCloud’s new feature will allow users to listen to 30-second clips of songs so they can decide whether they want to listen to the song in full.
SoundCloud announced a new feature in the form of a feed containing song snippets with a vertical display that can be swiped up or down to change them, like the TikTok application.
Reporting from TechCrunch (8/9), company stream The music company has been testing the feature since last March. Now, the feature will be available for iOS and Android users in the coming days.
This new feature will allow users to listen to 30-second song clips so they can decide whether they want to listen to the song in full. Just click the Play button on the trailer if you want to listen to the full version.
SoundCloud uses AI Musiio – a startup it acquired in 2022 for its enhanced music discovery experience – to automatically select the best 30 seconds of a song.
The new search feed view also now has a useful shortcut button for adding songs to a playlist or library. Users can also like tracks, so that they will appear in the “Liked tracks” playlist.
Users can still access the old-style feed via the “Followed” tab at the top of the screen to see songs published by the artists they follow.
In March, Spotify also announced a vertical feed with previews for music and podcasts. Additionally, TikTok Music and ByteDance’s Resso rely on vertical feeds for music discovery.
In a recent interview with Music Business Worldwide, SoundCloud head of music Emily Lovell said that more than 500,000 artists are now part of SoundCloud’s fan-supported royalty program, which launched in 2021.
The project distributes advertising dollars or subscriptions to artists based on the artists users listen to, rather than on a pro-rata basis that only counts overall streaming numbers.
