Google’s self-driving car, which is known by the public, has apparently motivated Baidu, a company from China, to compete in the field of self-driving cars.
Baidu is a Google-like company from China. Baidu emerged because China, which is a communist country, did not legalize Google as a search engine for information sources in its country. Also Read: Why is Google Banned in China?
Initially Baidu used a BMW 3 Series car that had been modified and installed Baidu AutoBrain software. This software is the main heart of a self-driving car because in that software the car is controlled automatically and several detection, positioning, control and decision-making commands are also carried out by the software.
Last year, Baidu’s BMW 3 Series car successfully operated in trial activities and successfully performed maneuvers such as changing lanes, turning around and exiting and entering toll roads.
Now, Baidu is starting to develop its self-driving car using a new vehicle unit, namely the modified Chery EQ. In the future, Baidu’s Self Driving Car which uses AutoBrain software is the Chery EQ car.
It is planned that cars that can drive without a driver will be used in certain areas in China as public transportation. It is estimated that in 2018 this car will be operational.
Shape Similar to Google Self Driving Car
If you look at its shape, Baidu’s Chery EQ is very similar to Google’s Self Driving car. With a small size and round shape.
Even though the shape is almost the same, Baidu’s Self Driving Car has a wider and more spacious cabin.
Baidu chose the Chery EQ as its next unmanned car unit because of its cheap price and compact size, making it more energy efficient and efficient.
For your information, this Chery EQ car costs only 9,000 USD or the equivalent of Rp. 120,000,000 only.
Baidu Collaborates with Ford to Build a Self-Driving Car
At the beginning of this month, Baidu collaborated with Ford to invest in developing the Self Driving Car. From this collaboration, Ford and Baidu managed to collect funds amounting to Rp. 200,000,000,000 to invest in Velodyne LiDAR.
Velodyne LiDAR is a company located in Silicon Valley with experience in the field of light, detection and ranging technology since 2005. This investment was made so that Baidu could cut the production costs of sensors for its self-driving cars.
And as a result, Velodyne LiDAR agreed to sell its sensor products for only 8,000 USD from the initial price of 80,000 USD.
